Phil Foden claimed his first major individual award of the season on Friday, becoming the 77th player to be named the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year. The award significantly increases the 23-year-old’s chances of winning the Premier League Player of the Season trophy.

Bookmakers Back Manchester City Star To Become Premier League POTS

An Incredible Season

Erling Haaland’s record-breaking start in the Premier League overshadowed Foden’s consistent improvement last season. But things quickly changed for the England international in the 2023-24 campaign.

Injuries for Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne forced Pep Guardiola to use Foden in several attacking positions, and with fantastic results. The academy graduate has developed into a cornerstone of City’s attacking line as they pursue their defence of the Premier League and FA Cup titles.

Not an Up-And-Coming Star Anymore

Members of the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) voted for Foden as their pick for the Player of the Year award as he became the seventh Manchester City player to claim the prestigious title.

Reacting to Foden’s achievement, Pep Guardiola said: “Every year the amount of games and minutes he is playing, he is more mature. He understands the game. But he has to continue because he is still young.”

Seven years after making his debut for Man City, Foden is now a full-fledged Premier League star with 250 appearances under his belt for the Citizens. However, the FWA award is unlikely to be his last individual trophy of the season.

Front Runners for Premier League Player of the Season Award

Winning the FWA award gives Foden a major boost in his bid to win the Premier League’s Player of the Season award. In the last ten seasons, the two awards have had different winners only on three occasions.

Manchester City players have won the Premier League POTS award in the last four campaigns, and Foden is now set to keep the trophy at Etihad. Bookmakers are favouring the young winger ahead of his teammate Rodri and Arsenal stars Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.
