Helmut Marko hopes Red Bull faces ‘no surprises’ at the Chinese GP after disastrous weekend in Melbourne
Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Red Bull has dominated Formula 1 since the start of ground effect era. Milton Keynes won three out of the four races this season except for the Australian GP. As Max Verstappen suffered an early retirement with Sergio Perez facing tire degradation issues in Melbourne. Dr. Helmut Marko hopes that such a situation doesn’t arise in the Chinese GP.

Team principal Christian Horner had previously claimed that the Chinese GP would be a ‘challenge’ for the Austrian team. Following this, Helmut Marko reflected upon the Australian GP and the issues faced there. Marko hoped that there would be no ‘surprises’ in the Chinese GP, like the ones faced in Melbourne. Additionally, the 80-year-old pointed out that tire degradation was one of the strengths of the team, yet they it turned out to be an issue at Albert Park.

I hope we won't have any surprises like in Melbourne, There the asphalt was so aggressive and we were completely wrong about tyre wear, which is precisely one of our strengths. Helmut Marko said, as reported by racingnews365.com.

However, the Chinese GP will return after five years as the ground-effect era challengers will be run around the circuit for the first time. Hence, Marko accepted that it could still be a challenge Milton Keynes and the rest of the grid. Nevertheless, the Austrian team was prepared for the Shanghai race after learning from the Australian weekend.

So it could still be a surprise that way [in China], but we have been warned by what happened at Melbourne and I think now we know better how to react. But it's a completely new situation for most of us. Helmut Marko noted.

Adrian Newey claims RB20 is an ‘extreme’ version of its predecessors

The radically-designed RB20 was thought of to take multiple crucial elements from the previous Red Bull machinery. However, as displayed, the RB20 has a lot of differences in aero and other elements. Aero-genius Adrian Newey shared his thoughts on the development process of the RB20.

Newey highlighted that the aero principals visible on the RB20 have stuck with the team since early 2022. However, the RB20’s exception was that it is a ‘more extreme’ version of its predecessors. Subsequently, the 65-year-old applauded the Red Bull factory and the ‘tremendous’ team of engineers working on making the challenger more and more competitive.

The aero principals which you now see on this year’s car compared to last year is a route we were taking really since early 2022. It’s just a more extreme version or route down that same path. Adrian Newey told Sky Sports F1.

Red Bull might eliminate competition early on, courtesy of its dominant RB20. However, Ferrari is seemingly closing in on the Austrian constructor. As such, the reigning world champions would hope to solidify their lead in the standings with a comfortable victory in Shanghai.
